Before communisim took over in Russia in 1917, religion was a powerful influence. As a visitor I noticed many churches, in the towns , in the big cities and the smallest villages in the countryside. I was able to photograph many. Except for the famous and the tourist attractions, many are very run down and are in need of extensive repairs. It was not unusual to find a church over 500 years old !
