As the Eiffel tower is to Paris/France, St Basil's Cathedral is the symbol of Moscow/Russia. Built between 1555 - 1561 on the order by Ivan the Terrible to commemorate the victory over the Kazan Khanate. It is believed to have been erected by a master builder by the name of Postnik Barma. Legend has it that Ivan the Terrible had the builder blinded upon completion so that he could not create anything else as beautiful. Each of the nine domes of the cathedral forms the top of a seperate church, each dedicated to a saint on whose feast day the Russian army acheived a victory. It is located at the end of Red Square in front of the Kremlin.
