The Trinity of St Sergiy Lavra located in
the town of Sergiev Posad about 40 miles north of
Moscow. This famous monastery/fortress was built in the 14th century. The town was
originally Sergiev Posad, but was changed to Zagorsk as a reward to a communist party boss
by the same name in the 1930's. Fortified by Ivan the Terrible, in the 1500's,
a young Peter the Great escaped there during uprisings. Over six centuries the
monastary and churches, bell tower & other buildings were erected. Now it
is a major tourist attraction and a working church with parishoners coming each week &
on holy days.
